BASQUE COUNTRY: FROM BEIJING +25 TO THE COUNTRY PACT
Within the framework of the 25th anniversary of the IV World Conference on Women held in Beijing, UN Women brought together a coalition of activists, feminists, young people and allies that set the challenge of achieving a transformative change for future generations with a tangible progress towards equality between women and men. This is how Generation Equality emerges in 2021, an initiative that has the challenge, until 2026, of accelerating the action and implementation of ambitious steps on gender equality at the global level, through the promotion of a coalition for gender equality.
The Basque Country, always aligned with the international framework in this field, decided to join the commemoration of the 25th anniversary and, in 2020, publicly acknowledging the women who, together with Emakunde, participated in this world meeting in 1995. In this meeting, as well as learning about the testimonies of these women, the project that would become the Country Pact for Equality and Lives Free from Violence against Women was presented. This was the beginning of the participative process of internal reflection that would be launched in 2021, already within the framework of the Generation Equality initiative.

THE COUNTRY PACT: COLLECTIVE DESIGN
Within the framework of the Generation Equality initiative, the Basque Country takes another step in its commitment to gender equality by designing and implementing, collectively and in a participatory manner, the Country Pact for Gender Equality and Lives Free from Violence against Women. The Basque Government, through Emakunde, launched in 2021 an invitation to the whole Basque society to participate in a process of reflection and participatory dialogue to move towards a truly egalitarian society. Following the implementation of a pilot experience carried out with the Basque Youth Council (EGK) and the Consultative Comission of Emakunde, citizens and a broad group of social, economic and political stakeholders developed an internal reflection process, based on the methodology resulting from this pilot experience. This process culminated in the design and implementation of 70 commitments aimed at contributing to gender equality between women and men until 2026, under the premise that gender equality is a country challenge where no one can be left behind.
On June 15, 2022, as a result of this collective reflection process, the Country Pact for gender equality and lives free from violence against women was presented in Bilbao. A document that included, with a country vision, the commitments to which the Basque Country is adhering between now and 2026, classified in 10 areas: Economic justice; Empowerment of women and girls; Male violence against women; Childhood and youth; Care; Involvement of men and boys; ecological transition; Digital transformation; Women's movements and feminist leaderships; Good governance.
